A Good Definition Of Idolatry

Proverbs 1:7 The fear of the Lord is the beginning of knowledge, but fools despise wisdom and instruction.

Read Proverbs 1:-9.

To be successful in this life, you must be wise; and to be truly wise, you must know God... must fear Him, in the sense of reverential trust, obedience, and love. “The fear of the Lord” is a phrase calling to mind the total humiliation which occurs when a sinful creature is confronted by his holy Creator. Daniel said, “[I] saw this great vision, and there remained no strength in me: for my comeliness was turned in me into corruption” (Dan. 10:8). Isaiah cried out upon seeing a vision of God’s holiness, “Woe is me, for I am undone!” (Isa. 6:5).

The fear of the Lord will keep you straight morally. Joseph, when pressured by temptation from Potiphar’s wife, said, “How then can I do this great wickedness, and sin against God?” (Gen. 39:9). The fear of the Lord guarantees that you will be secure amid the most dangerous circumstances! “The angel of the Lord encampeth round about them that fear Him, and delivereth them” (Ps. 34:7). And the fear of God lets you in on His secrets, thrilling your heart as you become attuned to His plans and purposes. “The secret of the Lord is with them that fear Him; and He will show them His covenant” (Ps. 25:14).

There is just one way to start right in life: by beginning with the fear of God. Put Him first in everything. If you have difficulty doing this, pray until the Lord has revealed Himself to your heart and until your will has said yes to Him. Then go on, trusting and obeying. Small thought here. The great hindrance to a wholesome fear of God is what the Bible calls idolatry... putting someone or something in the place of God where your life’s priorities are concerned.
